A San Francisco original
Benefit started in San Francisco in 1976, when twin sisters Jean and Jane Ford opened a small beauty boutique called The Face Place in the Mission District. The first product they sold there was Benetint, a rose-tinted stain for lips and cheeks that is still one of the brand’s best-known products. The shop grew into Benefit Cosmetics, and the brand has been owned by LVMH since 1999.
The brow bar idea is a San Francisco story too. Benefit opened its first Brow Bar in 2003, at a Macy’s in the city, and brow services became a signature of the brand. The Fillmore Street boutique, which carries the full range of Benefit makeup and skincare along with the BrowBar, is one of its neighborhood shops in its home city.
