Minnie Bells Soul Movement

Minnie Bell’s Soul Movement is a soul food restaurant at 1375 Fillmore St, run by chef Fernay McPherson, a third-generation Fillmore resident. The menu is built on her family’s recipes, with the soulful flavors and warmth of the South. The Fillmore restaurant is an expanded version of the original menu from Minnie Bell’s Emeryville location, which opened in 2018.

On the menu

The fried chicken, scented with rosemary, is the centerpiece. You can order it as a two-, four- or eight-piece meal or as a sandwich. Sides include collard greens, candied yams and cornbread.

A piece of the Fillmore’s history

The restaurant sits on a block that was once the heart of a thriving Black neighborhood, known as the Harlem of the West, with businesses like Gilmore’s Barbecue and the American Theater, a hub for Black jazz musicians. The dining room nods to that past, including a mural-sized photograph of the same stretch of Fillmore from the 1960s.
